This project combines my biotechnology background with my passion for scientific illustration. Creating visual concepts that communicate complex ideas clearly is something I truly enjoy, and I’m grateful that the artwork was recognized by ACS. <image:caption>How do cells communicate with each other and what does it look like if we could see it? I designed this concept journal cover inspired by Cell to explore that idea. Cells are never silent. They exchange information constantly through signals that shape life at every scale. This cover visualizes intercellular communication, portraying cellular signals as sparks and electric impulses moving between neighboring cells. Rather than focusing on a single pathway, the aim was to capture the rhythm, direction and energy of how cells interact. Designed as a concept journal cover, inspired by the visual language of Cell and other life science journals, where complex biology is distilled into a single powerful image. I am curious. How would you visualize dynamic biological processes? What makes a scientific image feel alive to you? <image:caption>Inspired by a decade of Nature Microbiology, I wanted to explore a simple idea: What if microbial structures could inspire smarter delivery systems? At the center of this piece is a bacterial flagellum in motion, carrying a structured spike coated microsphere. The surface is intentionally textured, designed for enhanced adhesion, a nod to how form can dictate function at the microscale. This is not just about movement. It is about controlled transport, attachment, and interaction. In nature, nothing is random. Surface structures, geometry, and dynamics are all finely tuned for performance. The question is how we translate these principles into bioengineering applications. For me, this connects closely to work on delivery systems, where interface design is often the key to functionality. <image:caption>Superhydrophobic coatings are redefining how scientists design surfaces in healthcare and materials science. Their remarkable water repellency arises from the morphological roughness of the coating, which minimizes liquid contact and prevents wetting at the interface. As a result, bacteria struggle to survive and proliferate, since most microbial activity depends on aqueous conditions. This opens new possibilities for preventing contamination and inflammation on treated surfaces through purely physical surface design. This cover concept explores water repellent interfaces as a passive strategy to reduce bacterial interaction, translating a structural property into a biological advantage. Inspired by the style of Advanced Materials journal cover art. <image:caption>Here’s a new Cover Art style illustration I created, inspired by Nature Microbiology. The concept visualizes the gut environment: intestinal microvilli in the background and microbial communities interacting with the host. These microbes can influence the gut’s own serotonin production which is a beautiful example of crosstalk between gut and microbiome. In the artwork, serotonin appears as glowing particles emerging within the villi, symbolizing this bioactive modulation by microbial colony. <image:caption>I created this concept Cover Art inspired by ACS Catalysis. The image shows hexokinase just before catalysis. The substrate is close to the active site, suspended in a moment where structure becomes function. In biology, transformation does not begin with motion. It begins with fit, balance, and molecular understanding. This artwork explores that threshold between potential and action. How close does chemistry need to be before it becomes life. <image:caption>Inspired by synthetic biology and the visual language of Nature journal covers, I created this concept cover illustration. This illustration explores synthetic biology through metaphor. A glass skeletal structure represents the engineered framework of biological design, while a heart and lungs knitted from wool symbolize living systems shaped by human intention. Together, they reflect the idea of building biology not as something mechanical, but as something carefully constructed, functional, and alive. Created as a conceptual visualization to explore how complex biological systems can be designed, assembled, and imagined through visual storytelling. <image:caption>The brain and the gut are in constant conversation. Through the gut - brain axis, the central nervous system and the gastrointestinal tract communicate via neural pathways such as the vagus nerve, as well as immune, hormonal, and microbial signaling. Increasing evidence shows that gut microorganisms can influence brain chemistry, mood, cognition, and stress responses. Understanding this powerful bidirectional connection is reshaping how scientists view the relationship between the microbiome and neurological health. This cover art concept, inspired by research often featured in Neuron journal, explores how complex biological ideas can be translated into visual language.
